What "Free" Means Here

Search for a free autocue and most of what comes back is not really free. It is a seven-day trial, or a free tier that caps your script length, or an app that stamps a logo across the corner of the video you just recorded.

LilPrompter is free in the plain sense. Every feature is on for everyone. There is no account, no email capture, no credit card, and no upgrade prompt waiting three minutes into your read. Your scripts save in your own browser rather than on a server.

There is also nothing to watermark. The autocue is a separate screen that scrolls text at you. It never sees, records, or processes your video, so your footage comes out of your camera exactly as your camera recorded it.

Included in the Free Autocue

Not a free tier. This is the whole thing.

Adjustable Scroll Speed

Slide the pace to match how you actually talk, and nudge it from the keyboard without stopping the take.

Mirror Mode

Flips the text horizontally for beam-splitter autocue rigs. Free here, paid in a lot of other apps.

Font Size to 128px

Read from a desk, from a tripod, or from across a room on a TV without squinting.

Multiple Scripts in Tabs

Keep the intro, the main read, and the outro in separate tabs and switch between takes instantly.

Keyboard and Voice Control

Start, stop, and change speed by key or by voice while you are standing at the camera.

No Watermark, No Ads

Nothing is added to your recording and nothing interrupts the page while you are reading.

Setting Up a Free Autocue at Home

01

Open it in the browser you already have

Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge. No installer and no account, so you are reading within about a minute.

02

Get the screen close to the lens

The gap between your script and your camera is what makes an autocue look obvious. Smaller gap, better eye-line.

03

Bring the camera up to eye level

A stack of books works. Reading down at a laptop on a desk is the single most common giveaway.

04

Do one practice pass for speed

Read a paragraph out loud and adjust. Aim slightly slower than feels natural rather than faster.

05

Record with whatever you own

Webcam, phone, DSLR, or a Zoom call. The autocue is its own screen, so it does not care what is recording.

Free Autocue FAQ

Is there a genuinely free autocue?

Yes. LilPrompter is free with no trial period and no paid tier. Scroll speed, mirror mode, font size, and multiple scripts are all included. There is no watermark and no account to create.

Do I need to download free autocue software?

No. This one runs online in a browser tab, so there is no installer, no app store, and nothing to update. That also means it works the same on a Windows laptop, a Mac, a Chromebook, or a tablet.

What is the catch with free autocue apps?

Usually one of three things: a watermark burned into your recording, a time limit on the free tier, or the good features like mirror mode sitting behind a subscription. LilPrompter does none of those. The prompter never touches your video file, so there is nothing to watermark.

Is a free online autocue good enough for professional work?

For most presenting work, yes. What a broadcast autocue adds is hardware: beam-splitter glass, a hand controller, and studio integration. The script scrolling itself is the same job. If you do buy a rig later, mirror mode flips the text so it reads correctly in the glass.

Does the free autocue work offline?

The page needs to load once. After that a modern browser will usually keep it available, and your saved scripts live in the browser rather than on a server. For a shoot with no connection, load the page before you leave.

Is free autocue software available for PC and Mac?

Yes, and it is the same tool on both. Because it runs in the browser there is no separate Windows build or Mac build to pick between. It also runs on Linux, Chromebooks, iPads, and Android tablets.
